Image Edit Assignment

Objective: Students will learn how to use the following tools: dodge, burn, additional brush tools, spot healing brush, healing brush, patch tool, and red eye tool.

Create a composition utilizing one old photograph to refurbish and one photograph featuring yourself to damage. Follow the instructions below:

Use your assigned old photograph twice in your composition.
- One to refurbish the image quality
- Two to add color
Also use one photograph of yourself to damage.
- De-saturate
- Add cracks, and smudges
Layout all three images on one page 8.5”x11” or larger
- Professionally print / mount for extra credit
Add type to the layout of your composition.

Create a Landscape

Use a photo from a landscape that you either take yourself or find online. Make sure it has a high resolution. Flickr, Stockxchng, and Wikimedia Commons are good sources.

Create a painting of the landscape so that none of the original photo shows through. Use what you've learned about the brushes, blur, smudge, and other tools to create an exciting landscape. Make it as beautiful as you can. If the colors in the original photo aren't that good, make your photo's colors better than the original!

I want to see the image in a 6" x 8" @ 300 dpi format, as well as a png at 600 x 800 px @ 72 dpi.

Due Wednesday 31 at the beginning of class.

Redesign a Room

Use Photoshop to create a before-and-after image of a redesigned a room. Change or add textures, colors, and objects in the room. Use the images provided here to create a completely new-looking room. Try to cover as much of the image with new material as you possibly can: new wallpaper, new bedding, new couch upholstery, new lights, new paintings, new TV programs, new everything! Lay out the final project with the before-and-after image on the same page.

Use any/all of the following tools to redesign the room:

Masking
Gradient
Blur, Smudge, Sharpen
Selective Color, Hue and Saturation
Transform Tools; skew, perspective, warp
Layers / Opacity
Shapes
Internet image sources

Example

Save project as yourname_room.jpg at 8.5” x 11” ; 150 Resolution.
Progress on assignment due at the end of class on Wednesday March 17.
Finished project due at the beginning of class on Monday March 22.

Using the type tool.

Create a visually recognizable self-portrait using only your type tool. Follow these guidelines to maximize your grade:

Use vector and raster text
Use all the items in your edit/transform menu at least once.
Use one or more filters in your composition – do not over-distort the type.
Make sure your composition is recognizable as something with a subject – no abstract stuff – you will be graded heavily on how identifiable your subject is.
Be creative

File (.jpeg) due before class Weds. March 10; approx. 8”x10” 300 dpi; convert to CMYK before sending.

Assignment 4: CD Cover

Create a CD cover for an album that already exists. You can choose any type of music you'd like. Feel free to explore various ways of creating images. There are very few limitations on this project. Here are the specifics:

CD cover must include name and title of album. If the album is self-titled, then just use the name of the group or artist.
The image should be 4.75" x 4.75".
You only need to do the front cover, not the back cover.
You should come up with 2 fully-designed ideas that we can talk through. Then we'll look them over in class and I'll grade the one I think is best.
Make sure these designs look good, too. I want you to show me that you can use the type tool, but I also want something that looks nice. We're starting to move beyond exercises and start designing "for real".
Look at other CD artwork for inspiration. Just typing in "Best CD Covers" on Google will bring up a bunch of results you can check out and possibly use.

Interesting Wacom Alternative

This inexpensive tablet might be useful for those of you interested in drawing on the computer but looking for an alternative to expensive Wacom tablets. I've never used this brand before, but for the price, it's probably worth checking out.

Just a quick note to say it's a good idea to bring a flash drive to class. You won't need one for Monday, but if you want to save your work, it'll be handy
